Week 1: YOU are the journalist

JOUR1111 started off with a bang! The very first lecture was a broad introduction of the course and left me happy with the choice I'd made to join the journalism field. Dr Bruce Redman started with the course philosophy "YOU are the journalist", but what does this mean? And what is journalism exactly? Here are a few schools of thought...

All of these statements are valid, but I most of all relate to Phillip Graham's take,
"Journalism is the first rough draft of history."
This is why I want to be a journalist, to be a part of a bigger picture and shed light on things that need to be addressed. We can learn so much from our history already and we should make the same available to future generations.

I also love Dr Redman's philosophy that YOU are the journalist. Journalism is so subjective and easily biased and has such a huge potential for damage if reported wrong. Because of this people have lost a lot of faith in journalists and journalism all together, claiming it all to be "organised gossip" or skewed to profit a certain party. In some ways I agree, like when it comes to publications like the Courier Mail or TMZ, but there is a lot of amazing journalism happening out in the world and to generalise isn't fair to those who care about their story.

All in all, this lecture made me super excited for the semester ahead. Dr Redman is a great lecturer and I look forward to next week!
